According to a report from Japanese automotive publication, Best Car Web, Mazda is currently working on an entirely new SUV design featuring recipes that make car enthusiasts eager to try it.

The new platform will feature a straight-six engine located in the front, and transmitting energy to the rear. A front-engined rear-wheel-drive (FR) SUV can seem like the kind of boost that is needed in the world’s most popular, yet also polarizing segments.

Apart from the likely next-gen CX-5/CX-50, this platform may be incorporated into the CX-8, which is expected to be next in line. The story said that the platform will be installed in an SUV that features three-row seating, and which is directly in the direction of the CX-8. In addition, Mazda is also mulling about an SUV-coupe version of the new generation CX-8 as well. The SUV-coupe has definitely been booming in recent times, with the most recent Toyota Harrier sporting a coupe-like design. Maybe this is Mazda’s response to the most popular Toyota cars in Japan.

Regarding powertrains, apart from the unnamed straight-six, the next-generation CX-8 may also come with a SkyActiv-X engine. The SkyActiv-X engine could be coupled with a mild-hybrid 48V technology (MHEV).
